Songs for a Rainy Day
Songs for a Rainy Day
Ahhh yes, the wintertime is quickly approaching and fall is swiftly disappearing. As residents of the temperate region of Southern California, we seem to go crazy when the weather changes. Pouring rains signify the apocalypse, meltingly hot sun is an affirmation that global warming is real and here to destroy us all, and heavy winds are most likely spreading some deadly, airborne strain of the swine flu. We are what some might call “weather dramatic.” As the weather changes and we change our wardrobes, it’s time we start changing our playlists as well to feature songs to ease out weather worries. Here’s what I’m listening to as we make the transition.
Feist “Anti-Pioneer”- With the release of Leslie Feist’s new album, “Metals,” listeners get a whole new taste of Ms. Feist. Rather than being packed with bubbly tunes, “Metals”, is filled with somber yet beautiful ballads created out of raw and pure heartbreak. Sad, I know, but it’s the perfect accompaniment to a warm blanket on a cool and dreary day.
Empire of The Sun “We Are The People”- This song is comprised of beautifully funky yet soothing music. Need I say more? Take a look at the album cover if you’re not convinced. Upbeat and catchy enough to get rid of the wintertime blues.
Bon Iver “For Emma”- A tune from Bon Iver’s 2008 album, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” “For Emma” is filled with Bon Iver’s ambient voice against the backdrop of a guitar strumming the same tune. Perfect song to clean house to.
Ellie Goulding “The Writer (Demo Version)”- Ahh yes, Ellie Goulding, the British pop sensation. You’re probably familiar with her electronic heavy beats and bubbly voice, but listen to her old stuff, like this tune, and you’ll be exposed to a new side of Ellie. This side is softer and calmer and something you could easily fall asleep to.
Kings of Convenience “Renegade”- Hell yes, you best bet that I put some Kings of Convenience on here. “Renegade” is a nice one. This Norweigen duo really knows how to croon away as the sun clears up and the skies become blue again.
